This is a love story about fish soup.
I have the same routine almost every morning. I wake up, run through my 3-part morning gratitude/meditation practice, and write. Sometimes it happens on Instagram if I make my way downstairs to unplug my phone.
This morning I was inspired by a post from the dear soul, Jenna Galbut.
Here are the words I posted on Instagram. I’m offering them to you here in the spirit of loving, being loved, learning, and teaching…
Imagine that whatever struggle you’re experiencing right now will be something that you’ll one day smile about, feel grateful for, LAUGH about.
Quick long story: There was a time about 8 years ago that my husband and I were going through a really rough time financially. REALLY ROUGH. The magazine industry was in a downward spiral and he wasn’t working at all (he’s a music photographer). We were hustling like crazy and felt defeated AF.
One day, when we had $32 in the bank, we said “fuck it,” and went out to lunch. It was our LAST $32. We went to a local mid-priced restaurant where I ordered chicken Marsala and he got a seafood stew.
When I tell you that this was the most DISGUSTING meal we’ve ever eaten, it’s no exaggeration. Add the fact that the restaurant was empty and showed all the signs of going out of business soon (which it did), and this was an almost comically dark and utterly depressing moment.
I think the soup had fish heads floating in it. It was basically guts water.
Fast-forward to last year. A ridiculously ROUGH year. There were times when we just sat and talked about what the next thing would be to crumble. It got dark.
But there was light too. In the middle of the crumbling. Because we had been there before—in a way. When the septic tank started bubbling to the surface, or one of my teenagers stopped talking to me, or one of us got rejected for some job… even when I spent a week in bed navigating a painful miscarriage… I knew we would get through it stronger.
Because of fish soup.
“FISH SOUP!” has become our mantra and rally call in these moments. One of us will throw our hands up and yell it out loud or whisper it to the other with a smile. “Fish soup” is our reminder to each other that it’s been shitty before, it will get shitty again, and we will survive… and we will one day laugh about it.
That’s life, y’all. Life is fish soup…
The fish head floating in cloudy water AND the laughter that will surely follow—if you let it. If you let yourself feel grateful about even the things you wish weren’t happening right now. I love you.
