Feeling bogged down by the weight of 1000 motivational memes about passion and finding your life’s purpose? Girrrrrrrl (or boy), I know how you feel.
Elizabeth Gilbert is one of my favorite authors and people to follow on social media. Her book Big Magic completely changed the way I look at my work and my life’s purpose. I made my husband, another creative, read it, too… I’d like to convince everyone to read it. It’s that good.
Elizabeth wrote this in one of her blogs:
“I am a big advocate for the pursuit of curiosity. You’ve maybe heard me talk about this before? We are constantly being told to pursue our passions in life, but there are times when passion is a TALL ORDER, and really hard to reach. In seasons of confusion, of loss, of boredom, of insecurity, of distraction, the idea of ‘passion’ can feel completely inaccessible and impossible. In such times, you are lucky to be able to get your laundry done (that sometimes feels as high as you can aim) and when someone tells you to follow your passion, you want to give them the middle finger. (Go ahead and do it, by the way. But wait till their back is turned, out of civility.) But curiosity, I have found, is always within reach. Passion is a tower of flame, but curiosity is a tiny tap on the shoulder — a little whisper in the ear that says, ‘Hey, that’s kind of interesting…’ Passion is rare; curiosity is everyday.”
How good is that? I read that last sentence and let out a big exhale that made me feel like 50 pounds of worry was magically lifted off my back. Constantly looking for, working for, and running toward my passion feels heavy sometimes.
I’m ready to feel light… especially in my efforts to express my creativity.
My meditation offering for you is one that came by request, a Meditation for Creativity.
It’s meant to inspire you to follow your curiosity, to acknowledge the value of your voice, and to embrace the worthiness of your words. The whole world is waiting for you to share your creativity (including me).
