We all want to eat cleaner/healthier/better, because we know that above all, what we eat contributes more to our overall health, vitality, and longevity.
But how do we know what’s helping and hurting our healthy eating efforts?
Here are three mistakes that you may be making right now that you can change as quickly as the time it takes to watch this video.
1. You think “organic” means healthy. Just because something is made without chemical pesticides doesn’t mean it’s good for you. It’s certainly better than its non-organic counterpart, but you have to look at a food’s ingredient list to determine its nutritional value. This same rule goes for all the healthy buzzwords: Gluten-Free, All-Natural, Non-GMO, Paleo, Artisanal, Vegan, Wild-Forged, Cage-Free, Free-Range… These labels often serve as more of a marketing device than a valuable informational tool. Shop ingredients first, labels second.

2. You’re caught in a treat-binge-cleanse cycle. Indulgence is awesome, and clean-living is the way to go, but it’s crucial to understand that these two concepts are not mutually exclusive. Binging on junk food and then trying to clean up your act with a juice cleanse isn’t healthy. In fact, it could be the cause of your weight-loss plateau, lack of energy, chronic digestion issues, skin problems… It’s no beuno, for sure. Your body needs consistency for true health. Be consistent with your clean eating habits, and indulge in healthy options like fruit, dark chocolate, and foods with less than five ingredients (that you can actually pronounce).

3. You’re following a diet instead of your intuition. Sticking to strict diet guidelines can be helpful for people who have no idea what and how to eat, but it’s nearly impossible to follow a rigid diet long-term. Constantly denying yourself entire food groups (and foods that you genuinely enjoy) can be dangerous for both your physical and emotional health. Instead, ask yourself how each food choice serves you in the here and now. Choose foods based on their nutritional value and whether you enjoy them or not, not whether they fit into a particular diet plan.
