Anxiety can be triggered by many things… fear, worry, anger, frustration. But what about anxiety that’s triggered – or made worse – by a fear or worry about anxiety itself?
I suffered from severe anxiety and panic attacks for nearly 20 years of my life – from childhood until I was almost 30 years old… and I still experience anxiety. It’s definitely a rare occurrence, but it’s a part of my personality that I have to manage. And through the work I’ve done to manage my anxiety, I discovered that the worst episodes were not just about the incident or thought that triggered the panicked response. They were more about the fear of losing control of my response – the panic would consume me, and I could see no escape. I was having anxiety about my anxiety, and I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to rescue myself. I would feel like I was dying.
So this is a meditation for anxiety about anxiety. Please listen closely to the messages that I’m offering you today… They have helped me to manage and heal my fear of losing control, and I know that they can do the same for you.
For today’s meditation, I want you to try a different type of practice. I never insist that you try to force your thoughts out or try to silent your mind. That’s too much pressure. I always want you to allow your thoughts before gently and politely saying “goodbye.”
When you’re feeling anxious, your thoughts may not just be streaming in… they may be flying in, one after another, jumbling and rattling your brain. Today your practice is to allow all of that to happen. Allow every thought. Welcome it in, and let it linger. Today you don’t have to examine or figure out a thing. Today, the observing is just about observing the chaos and knowing that it can’t hurt you.
You are safe in this moment.
Stay blissed in! xx
