Sometimes losing control is the best way to take control.
For today’s meditation, I want your focus to be pointed only to one mantra. Then, if you’re willing, indulge me while I offer just a few thoughts and practices that I used when I was struggling with losing control in my own life.
Inhale, exhale. That’s all that’s required of you for this meditation.
Inhale and say “inhale” either silently or aloud.
Exhale and do the same.
Don’t try to change or alter your breath. Allow your breath to just do its thing. Allow yourself to be taken for that ride, because that is the one that is solely your own. Your breath and your heartbeat will guide you through this meditation. Everything else is external and unimportant.
Even my words can be unimportant unless they light a spark in you. And if you feel inspired, let your inspiration take you to a place that is your own. Detach yourself from my voice and my words and remain inside of yourself.
If during this meditation a thought creeps in, accept it with curiosity. Ask yourself, “Why am I having this thought?” Then smile and let it go. The answer isn’t important right now. Understand that thoughts come and go and it’s not our job to harness, interpret, and take action on them in every moment.
Now is our time for meditation, observation, and quiet. Observe and let your thoughts drift off – out of your quiet space.
If you find yourself being carried by your thoughts, repeat: inhale, exhale.
You may find the need to do this again and again during this meditation. No matter how strong we are – how in control we perceive ourselves to be, we often find ourselves being carried by our thoughts and circumstances.
This is because we think that our thoughts, our environments, and the things that happen to us are who we are.
That is simply untrue.
We aren’t any of those things.
We are quiet and perfect souls sitting in observation of these things. We have to power to steady ourselves, like anchored boats. It isn’t necessary to be carried away by every wind or tide, even if we find ourselves being bobbled by a wave.
Let the waves pass under you and move on into the vast ocean. Allow the winds of change to gently brush your skin to remind you that they’re there, but then say “see ya later” as they continue to blow past you.
The waves, the wind, the bumps, the challenges, and the changes all happen without your help and none of those things need your help or guidance to keep happening.
When you acknowledge how insignificant you are in the process of nature, in the actions and opinions of others, and in the general goings-on of the world, you will experience tremendous freedom and joy.
The sun will rise and set without your help. People will make mistakes and form opinions without having to look through your prism. Your job is to simply be still, observe, and let go.
