Danny J – former figure competitor and founder of The Sweaty Betties
In what I can only describe as a pang of sadness and confusion, I’ve been having a very strong reaction to all the instagram and other social media posts about my friends who have recently decided to enter the world of figure competitions. I can’t say that these are feelings that don’t carry judgement with them, and for that I’m not proud.
These friends and colleagues are women who hold a great deal of my respect. I admire their dedication, their message of health and empowerment, and their commitment to doing something good for themselves.
But something just doesn’t feel right.
I’ll be the first to admit that I know almost nothing about the culture of figure competitions. The glimpses that I get through social media is basically all I have to draw upon. I remember being in the gym with my mom in the 80s when she was heavily involved in body-building, and I know the toll that took on her body and mindset, but that’s where my experience ends.
My very close friend and business partner, Danny J – founder The Sweaty Betties, is someone who has a wealth of experience and knowledge about training for and competing in figure contests. I called on her to shed a little light on the subject for me and for any of you who may be thinking about competing yourself.
Danny’s professional and educational credentials are a mile-long, so I’m confident that I’m bringing one the best to talk to you. The community she has built on Facebook is nothing short of amazing. Women of all different shapes, sizes, and backgrounds come together to share laughs, heartache, and triumphs on their journey to self-improvement and true rocking health. Danny is also funny, down-to-earth, and incredibly honest about her own journey – she basically kicks ass up and down the block every day. I love Danny and I know you will, too!
