Today’s video was actually the first one I planned to do with Amanda Russell. Our 4-Minute Abs Workout and beginner meditation videos were just afterthoughts – something we thought that you guys would enjoy and that would be a fun way to compliment our interview.
We first met when we were both selected be part of the YouTube Next Trainer program back in 2011, and so much has changed for the amazing since then. Our channels and audiences have grown by leaps and bounds, and we’re both working full-time on our businesses. YouTube has been an amazing platform for our catapult into entrepreneurship.
But some things haven’t changed after all this time. Because we put ourselves out there as fitness experts and as women whose lifestyles should be regarded as healthy examples to emulate, we open ourselves up to receive a lot of criticism. And believe me – we get it. LOTS of it. And it gets ugly.
I watch a lot of videos featuring my YouTube friends, and I’ve noticed that Amanda seems to get comments that are a little uglier than most. So when we started talking about a collaboration and about the possibility of her doing a video with me for my “You Have 4 Minutes” interview series, I had to ask her if she would talk about the most negative and frequent comment she gets.
On the day I visited her (with Justin and Baby Summer in tow) at her apartment in Tribeca, New York City, we chatted about the usual girly stuff, and then we got down to some serious discussion. In fact, we had so much to say that we continued the conversation in another video on Amanda’s channel. This is a MUST watch. Not only is this the first time Amanda has approached this subject in depth on a public platform, but it’s an important message for every young woman to hear.
Watch our light-hearted chat below, and then head over to Amanda’s YouTube channel for our in-depth discussion on body-shaming and what it feels like when it happens in the least expected places. xx
