I used to be skinny-fat. You know what that means. I looked great in tight jeans, but I felt like crap all the time. I ate like garbage, and I didn’t have enough endurance to run two minutes on the treadmill. Yes, literally – two minutes.
Then I got fit – kind of. I worked out ALL THE TIME, counted calories, weighed myself daily, and kept a meticulous food diary. My body looked incredible, but I was obsessed with getting in shape. An unhealthy mind = an unhealthy body. So I was still missing the point.
Then I got serious about being HAPPY. I started eating a more plant-based diet, chose workouts and other methods of exercise that were KINDER to my body, stopped counting calories, and finally THREW OUT MY SCALE. Yoga, meditation, and green juice became part of my awesome, kick-ass everyday.

Each stage of my journey to health was important, so I’ll never say that tools like scales or food diaries are totally useless. In fact, I think a food diary is one of the most incredible tools for teaching someone who is struggling with her diet or weight loss to PAY ATTENTION to how she’s honoring herself with food. The first step to true and lasting health is simply paying attention. It’s a law of the Universe. When something is observed, it is compelled to change.
But now I need to fast forward to NOW.
I’m in Disney World, on vacation with my husband and four hungry kids, and 99% of the food here is the exact opposite of what I would ever buy or prepare for my family. So what do I do when I’m on vacation? Do I starve? Do I pack a suitcase of special food? Or do I just STFU and eat the french fries?
My vacation diet philosophy isn’t so different from my everyday diet philosophy, but the list of food I’m eating is VERY different. And it’s all because of five little words that I ask myself before every food choice I make.
