As I write this, I’m waiting for Hurricane Sandy to make her way to New Jersey. My generator is gassed up and ready to go, and I spent way too much money on snacks and fruit and cans of organic soup. Justin is stranded in New Orleans, finishing up a job shooting the Voodoo music festival, unable to fly home tomorrow on his scheduled-but-now-cancelled flight. So it’s the same old story; I’m stuck at home with the kids, and he’s stuck hanging out with rockstars. I know, I know – he’d rather be here with us. *wink*
It seems that every time a big hurricane passes through, I find a way to connect it to my yoga practice. Truthfully, I connect EVERYTHING to my yoga practice. Below is a photo I took in April 2011 after a hurricane passed through my town and a video I made in August 2011 during Hurricane Irene.
Hurricanes & Yoga: In yoga, I’ll go into a pose farther than I ever have before. It may feel uncomfortable because I’ve never been there – in that position. My body isn’t breaking, it’s just bending deeper, which feels unfamiliar and not at ease. But then, after taking a couple deep breaths, I ease into it and discover it’s not so bad after all. Life is sometimes like that, too. We’re not breaking, just moving into a temporary, uncomfortable position. Don’t be this tree in a storm. Be the one that bends.
