Peas & rice, the coop is finally done! The plastic corrugated roof was installed today, and we moved the coop into it’s permanent place in the vegetable garden.
My neighbors, Aisha and Dawn, and my mailman, Tony, all pitched in to help us carry the coop to it’s new spot in the backyard. We attached two metal brackets to the front and rear of the coop and slid a long 2×4 through the brackets to make it easier for four people to carry the structure. Now we’ll be able to leave the brackets on and move the coop whenever we need to. This is only one of many great ideas I’ve found on BackyardChickens.com.
My dad also helped me make a “chicken ladder” out of dead branches that had fallen off neighborhood trees. The littlest chick was the first to climb up on a rung and “roost”. I suppose she was tired of getting picked on by the bigger Cochins in the coop.
We are thrilled with how awesome the chicken coop looks… inspired by the candy-colored homes of the Yucatan Peninsula and built with a mix of traditional and modern materials. I hope the chickens love it as much as we do :)
